When grooming, cats often ingest (eat) any fleas that they discover, which can make it hard to find adult fleas in the hair jacket. An itchy cat, or insect bites concerning human ankles, may be the and no-one else sign of an infestation.
The best mannerism to confrontation the presence of fleas is often to comb the cat meticulously along surrounded by a fine-toothed flea comb. If you reach this on summit of a clean white surface such as a large piece of white paper, any fleas or flea dirts (flea excrement consisting of digested blood) will be deposited onto the surface. If there is any debris (for example little black specs), place this upon some damp cotton wool if these are flea dirts, they will slowly terminate leaving behind red-brown blood marks. This demonstrates the presence of fleas even though adults cannot be found. Around the home simple vacuum will get rid of the fleas and if you are concerned with fleas on yourself then showering and washing with shampoo will be more than enough
There is a vast array of flea treatments available from vets, pet shops and supermarkets for use in and on cats here are some of my recommendations from people I know and products I have used:
